The short version
Same design in two sizes: 8 kW and two MPPTs against 12 kW and three.
- 12kPV: Your loads sit comfortably under 8 kW.
- 18kPV: You need 12 kW of continuous output.
The maker says the 12kPV shares its design and software with the 18kPV, in a more compact and more affordable package. So this is a size decision, not a feature decision: how much output, how much solar and how large a battery bank do you actually need.

Highlighted = the better figure where both datasheets give a number (higher is better, except idle draw). More is not always better: a larger solar input, for example, needs a bigger battery and wiring to use it. Sources: EG4 12kPV datasheet · EG4 18kPV datasheet. Checked September 30, 2026. “Not on datasheet” means the sheet does not list that line, not that the product lacks it.
What the 12kPV and 18kPV numbers mean
- Output: 8,000 W continuous on the 12kPV; 12,000 W at 240 V (10,400 W at 208 V) on the 18kPV.
- Solar: two MPPTs and up to 15,000 W recommended on the 12kPV; three MPPTs and up to 21,000 W on the 18kPV.
- Peak power: the 12kPV lists 16 kW for half a second; the 18kPV lists 14,700 W for 10 minutes with PV.
- Battery: more than 200 Ah per inverter on the 12kPV, at least 300 Ah on the 18kPV.
- Standby draw: under 55 W on the 12kPV; about 70 W normal and about 18 W standby on the 18kPV.
- Size: 110 lbs against 121 lbs, both NEMA 4X, both 10 years, both up to 10 units in parallel.

12kPV or 18kPV: who should pick which
Pick the 12kPV if…
- Your loads sit comfortably under 8 kW.
- Your array is 15 kW or less.
- You want the more compact unit and a smaller battery bank.
Pick the 18kPV if…
- You need 12 kW of continuous output.
- You have three roof orientations or a large array to land on three MPPTs.
- You want the larger solar input, up to 21,000 W recommended.
EG4 12kPV vs 18kPV: questions people ask
Do the 12kPV and 18kPV use the same software?
The maker says the 12kPV shares the same design and software as the 18kPV.
What strings should I plan for?
Both datasheets say the inverter faults at 550 V, so plan strings below that even though the DC input range goes to 600 V. Our string calculator uses the 550 V figure.
