EG4 18kPV vs 12000XP

Two pieces of home solar equipment side by side in a utility space.

Datasheet scoreboard: 8 lines where both datasheets list a number. It counts who has the bigger (or, for idle draw, smaller) figure; it is not a quality rating and says nothing about reliability.

The short version

A grid-connected hybrid against an off-grid workhorse with more solar input.

  • 18kPV: The grid is part of the system: you want grid-assist or grid-tied operation as well as backup.
  • 12000XP: You are off-grid, or use the grid only for charging.

Two high-power inverters that approach the job differently. The 18kPV is a hybrid that can run off-grid, grid-assist or grid-tied. The 12000XP is an off-grid inverter that can charge from the grid and offers more solar input and generator-friendly ports. The right one depends on whether the utility is part of your plan.

Highlighted = the better figure where both datasheets give a number (higher is better, except idle draw). More is not always better: a larger solar input, for example, needs a bigger battery and wiring to use it. Sources: EG4 18kPV datasheet · EG4 12000XP datasheet. Checked September 30, 2026. “Not on datasheet” means the sheet does not list that line, not that the product lacks it.

What the 18kPV and 12000XP numbers mean

  • Role: hybrid (18kPV) against off-grid with grid charging (12000XP).
  • Output: 12,000 W at 240 V on the 18kPV; 12,000 W without PV on the 12000XP, with the 15,000 W with-PV figure limited to model IV-15000-XP-IN-01.
  • Solar: 21,000 W recommended on three MPPTs for the 18kPV; 28,000 W recommended on two MPPTs for the 12000XP.
  • Voltage window: MPPT operating range 140–500 VDC on the 18kPV against 120–385 VDC on the 12000XP, which changes how many panels fit on a string.
  • Enclosure: NEMA 4X against IP20.
  • Warranty: 10 years against 5 years. Weight: 121 lbs against 104.7 lbs.

18kPV or 12000XP: who should pick which

Pick the 18kPV if…

  • The grid is part of the system: you want grid-assist or grid-tied operation as well as backup.
  • The inverter may be outdoors.
  • You want the longer warranty.

Pick the 12000XP if…

  • You are off-grid, or use the grid only for charging.
  • You have a large array on two strings or more per MPPT, up to 28,000 W recommended.
  • The inverter will sit in a dry indoor room.

EG4 18kPV vs 12000XP: questions people ask

Which handles more solar?

The 12000XP: up to 28,000 W recommended, against 21,000 W for the 18kPV.

Why do the string limits differ?

The datasheets give different MPPT operating windows, 140–500 VDC against 120–385 VDC, and different voltage ceilings. Use the string calculator with each inverter selected.
