It counts who has the bigger (or, for idle draw, smaller) figure; it is not a quality rating and says nothing about reliability.
The short version
Same family, double the output: choose by how many watts you need without sun.
- 6000XP: A cabin, small home or critical-loads setup where about 6 kW is enough.
- 12000XP: A larger house or workshop that needs 12,000 W without sun.
These are the two off-grid inverters in EG4's XP line, and the choice is mostly about scale. The 6000XP is the lighter, smaller unit; the 12000XP doubles the continuous output and nearly triples the solar it accepts.

Highlighted = the better figure where both datasheets give a number (higher is better, except idle draw). More is not always better: a larger solar input, for example, needs a bigger battery and wiring to use it. Sources: EG4 6000XP datasheet · EG4 12000XP datasheet. Checked September 30, 2026. “Not on datasheet” means the sheet does not list that line, not that the product lacks it.
What the 6000XP and 12000XP numbers mean
- Continuous output: 6,000 W on the 6000XP; 12,000 W without solar on the 12000XP (15,000 W with PV only on model IV-15000-XP-IN-01).
- Surge: the 6000XP lists 12,000 W for about 3.5 seconds; the 12000XP lists 15,360 W for about 10 seconds on battery only.
- Solar: the 6000XP recommends up to 10,000 W; the 12000XP up to 28,000 W. Both have two MPPTs, but the 12000XP takes 35 A per MPPT against 17 A, and has a 100–480 VDC input range on both.
- Idle draw: the 6000XP lists about 50 W on battery (under 30 W with PV); the 12000XP lists under 70 W on standby.
- Battery: the datasheets recommend more than 200 Ah per 6000XP and more than 400 Ah per 12000XP.
- Size and weight: 52.9 lbs for the 6000XP, 104.7 lbs for the 12000XP. Warranty is 5 years on both.

6000XP or 12000XP: who should pick which
Pick the 6000XP if…
- A cabin, small home or critical-loads setup where about 6 kW is enough.
- You want the lighter unit that is easier to mount.
- You will add capacity later by paralleling, up to 16 units.
Pick the 12000XP if…
- A larger house or workshop that needs 12,000 W without sun.
- You have a big array, up to 28,000 W recommended, to feed.
- You can budget a battery bank of 400 Ah or more per inverter.
EG4 6000XP vs 12000XP: questions people ask
Do the 6000XP and 12000XP have different warranties?
No. Both datasheets list a 5-year standard warranty.
Which one handles a well pump better?
Compare each unit's surge line with your pump's start-up draw: 12,000 W for about 3.5 seconds on the 6000XP, 15,360 W for about 10 seconds on the 12000XP. Our well-pump explainer shows how to estimate the start-up draw.
